How a top UK university went digital with fire safety management

Principal Fire Safety Manager for Manchester Metropolitan University, Amanda, knew it was time to leave paper logbooks behind and go digital for her 36 buildings on campus.

Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the UK’s largest universities with around 40,000 students enrolled to study there every year. By continuously investing in their facilities, Manchester Met gives students the opportunity to study subjects they are passionate about while being able to live in one of the country’s busiest and most vibrant cities.

With thousands of people on campus, high-tech facilities, and public buildings, guaranteeing daily health and fire safety procedures were completed and recorded accurately was one of Manchester Met’s biggest concerns.

Manchester Met struggled with keeping all 36 paper fire logbooks updated and in good repair given the continuous development happening on campus. And with new buildings planned for the future, Amanda knew there had to be a better way to manage all this fire safety information.

When Amanda discovered Tio she immediately began a 4-week trial of Tio using three buildings as the test. The test was a success. Not only did Amanda successfully convert her paper logbook in to a digital one, but her colleague Fatah, trained their staff to use Tio too. Manchester Met has now digitised all 36 logbooks to fully switch to the Tio system with no time, money, or resource lost in the process.

Today, Manchester Met’s fire safety documents for each building are all uploaded to the cloud and staff can update each building’s fire logbook by simply scanning the QR codes located on each fire panel.
When new or inexperienced staff need to complete fire safety tests, Amanda – and Manchester Met can now rely on Tio to show them how to do them.

With the free built-in Tio how-to guides, Manchester Met staff can follow step-by-step instructions on how to complete every test. This ensures every test is done correctly, comprehensively, and is recorded accurately.

With thousands of people depending on every safety issue being resolved – Tio’s notification system enables Manchester Met staff to keep on top of remedial work and understand the status of every building on-demand.

Manchester Met is now using Tio in 36 buildings and Amanda – as the Principal Fire Safety Manager – is confident that her team are monitoring and managing the campus’s fire safety compliance from a single online dashboard. She can personally monitor which tests haven’t been done and has set Tio up to automatically notify the responsible people to keep the logbook updated.

With so much time and effort saved, Amanda now has the capacity to properly plan the future of Manchester Metropolitan University. The university has no plans to use paper logbooks ever again.
